Tybee Island sits at the eastern terminus of US-80, approximately 18 miles and a 25-30 minute drive from downtown Savannah across the Bull River, Lazaretto Creek, and other tidal marsh crossings. The town occupies roughly three square miles at the mouth of the Savannah River adjacent to Fort Pulaski National Monument, with the historic 1867 Tybee Island Light Station at its north end and the Tybee Pier and Pavilion at its south end.

History
Tybee Island's lighthouse dates to 1736 with the current 1867 tower; the island was a Union Army stronghold during the Civil War supporting the siege of nearby Fort Pulaski. The island incorporated as a town and developed into a streetcar-era beach resort in the late 19th and early 20th centuries after rail and causeway access connected it to Savannah.
